Course description

This introductory course is the first of two courses designed to prepare the student for clinical competency in the diagnosis, management and prosthetic treatment of edentulous patients. This  course series begins with the D2 Summer Quarter Pre-clinical Laboratory Course – Introduction to Edentulous Patient Treatment, and culminates with the Clinical Complete Denture Course in the D2 Fall Quarter.

The Summer Quarter Pre-clinical course (which extends into the first three sessions of the Fall Quarter) serves as an introduction to the edentulous patient and diagnosis, general concepts of complete denture prosthodontics, and the role that understanding complete denture therapy and occlusion plays in all aspects of patient treatment, including dental implant treatment planning, fixed prosthodontics and esthetic dentistry, oral surgery and orthodontic/orthognathic treatment. In addition, this course serves as a Laboratory Simulation of Clinical and Laboratory Procedures utilized in the treatment of the edentulous patient with Complete Dentures.

During the Fall Quarter Clinical Complete Denture Course, students will apply the knowledge and skills learned and practiced during the Summer Quarter Course by participating in treatment of an actual edentulous patient in a clinical group setting.
