Adolescence To Adulthood
Course description
This course describes the development from adolescence through middle adulthood; describes selected health issues that are common during this age group (including atypical development, substance use and abuse, and interpersonal violence); and presents a model of the doctor‐patient relationship and patient management strategies between the dentist and patient/parent. The importance of social determinants of health in reducing health disparities and health equity is emphasized, including how the dentist can involve social workers to connect patients with enabling resources, such as transportation assistance. Clear and active verbal and written communication with patients and providers is essential for successful patient management and are emphasized and explored by the students.
