Course description 

In this course, students will learn fundamental concepts of health promotion and disease prevention at the population/community level, and its applications in dentistry at the individual patient level.  Emphasis will be placed on patient nutritional risk assessment, screening, and nutritional counseling. Culture and health determinants’ impact on oral health and occupational and environmental hazards faced by dental professionals will be discussed. Local and state-level programs/policies that enhance dentists’ ability to prevent disease and promote oral health will be taught. The concepts highlighted will directly or indirectly impact the practice of dentistry and the community where dentists will practice.
