Advanced Education in General Dentistry

Length of Program: 1-4 Quarters

Applicants must specify the quarter they would like to begin and the length of program they desire. It is encouraged for preceptors to begin during the summer quarter for 1 year (4 quarters).

The Advanced Education General Dentistry (AEGD) - Westwood Preceptorship program is designed to expose foreign-trained primary care general dentistry practitioners to the management of comprehensive and complex general dentistry cases, including restorations and surgical placements of dental implants. It is for those who wish for exposure to treating various complex and comprehensive cases, and plan to remain a primary care general dentistry practitioner. The program is designed to enhance each preceptor’s ability to be ready for more complicated cases in a private practice general dentistry environment.

The didactic portion of the program, which includes various aspects of basic and clinical sciences in dentistry, runs throughout the academic year with a concentrated curriculum in the month of July. Topics covered include all specialty areas of dentistry, physical diagnosis, treatment planning, medical emergencies, elements of sedation, oral pathology, pharmacology, orofacial pain & dysfunction, dental implantology, oral radiology, literature review, practice management, periodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics, sports dentistry, etc.

Clinical observation occurs in the AEGD clinic located at the Westwood site. Preceptors are given the opportunity to observe and assist the treating faculty or resident dentist with limited chair-side assisting duties in various dental disciplines such as prosthodontics, periodontal and oral surgery, esthetic dentistry, implant dentistry, simple orthodontics, endodontics, and care of the medically compromised patient.

A certificate of attendance is awarded upon successful completion of the program. This certificate is not the same as the postgraduate program certificate awarded to full-time international postgraduates in specialty training as a qualification for recognition by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Selection Process & Factors

Phone interviews may be conducted though they are usually not required. If you have been selected to interview, you will be notified by the Clinic Administrator.

The admissions committee considers the following criteria in its decisions:

  • Academic achievement

  • Content of personal statement

  • Content of confidential reports

  • Demonstrated interest in/commitment to general dentistry

  • Life experience

Accepted candidates are notified by telephone. Decisions will be available approximately one week after the application is received. A letter of acceptance signed by the Program Director and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs will be issued upon acceptance.
