Length of Program: 1-4 Quarters*

Number of Positions: 1-2

Program Director: Dr. Eric Sung

* Didactic courses are not repeated throughout the year. The program is specified to the individual and is formulated through discussions between the preceptor and the program director. The program director reserves the right to modify the program content at any time based upon the needs and/or performance of the preceptor.

The intent of the Hospital Dentistry Preceptorship program is to provide the preceptor with an overview of the dental management of medically compromised patients in both the outpatient and inpatient settings, as well as provide exposure to the latest philosophies in all phases of general dentistry. This is accomplished through the active participation in didactic courses and clinical rotations that coincide with the General Practice Residency Program (link to program). The breadth and number of experiences will vary depending on the length of program chosen and the effort put forth by the preceptor. This program is an excellent opportunity for foreign-trained dentists to see the integration of basic sciences with clinical patient care.

Curriculum

During the early part of the program, the preceptor will attend many lectures on advanced dental techniques and management of the medically compromised patient population. Clinically, the preceptor will devote a significant amount of time observing both the faculty and the residents in the general clinic and in the operating room. Upon completion of the program, the preceptor will have increased knowledge in advanced dental care along with working on a patient population which has less than ideal health. This will also include patients who may require oral pre-medication or IVs or even treatment in the operating room setting.

Dental procedures performed in the clinic are generally comprehensive dental treatments. This includes periodontal therapy, restorative care, fixed prosthetics, removable prosthetics, surgery, and endodontic therapy.
