In Memoriam: Susan Gerski, RDA
Susan Gerski, RDA, the longest-serving staff member in UCLA School of Dentistry history, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025, at the age of 76.
Over her 56 years of incredible dedication to the School’s clinic operations, Gerski touched the lives of thousands of students, faculty, fellow staff, and patients. Not only was her work truly exemplary but her dedication, integrity, and deep care for generations of budding student dentists will forever be remembered. A wealth of institutional knowledge and an unwavering commitment to her role made Gerski an invaluable asset to the School.
“Many of us had the privilege of knowing Susan not just as a colleague but as a friend,” said Dr. Sean Mong, director of the Dental Student General Clinic. “Her impact on our staff, students, and faculty cannot be overstated. She will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing and working with her.”
Gerski began as a dental assistant trainee at UCLA in September 1968, less than four years after the School’s opening. Her early years were spent assisting in Hospital Dentistry (now Special Patient Care). She then moved to the General Clinic in 1977, holding several roles including dental assistant supervisor starting in 1994. Susan achieved her registered dental assistant certification in 1999.
Gerski’s decades of dedication to the School were acknowledged during last September’s 60th Anniversary Celebration, which she attended.
“On behalf of our entire School community, I extend our deepest sympathies to Susan's family and loved ones,” said Dean Dr. Paul H. Krebsbach.
