The UCLA School of Dentistry’s Section of Orthodontics welcomed a dedicated group of alumni, faculty, residents, and guests for the 2025 John Jones Orthodontics Alumni Day on Friday, May 30. Hosted at the Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center and named in honor of a beloved former residency program director who passed away in late 2022, the day combined education from leading clinicians, networking, and celebration.

The event began with a continental breakfast and warm welcome from Dr. Sunil Kapila, professor and Thomas R. Bales Endowed Chair of Orthodontics, who reflected on the legacy of Dr. Jones and the spirit of community he fostered. “This year’s event was a fitting tribute to Dr. Jones, bringing together people who care deeply about education, mentorship, and each other,” said Dr. Kapila. “We had a highly interactive audience that made the learning experience both engaging and enjoyable.”

Three UCLA Orthodontics educators – Drs. Jason Pair, O. ’99, Pat Turley, D.D.S. ’75, and Farnaz Younessian – delivered continuing education lectures on topics ranging from multidisciplinary aligner therapy to early interceptive treatment and managing Class II malocclusions. Attendees received six hours of free continuing education credit.

The morning also spotlighted the program’s six graduating residents, who presented case studies in advance of the School’s commencement ceremony on Sunday, June 1: Drs. Scott Barlow, Tyler Brennan, Muktai Deshpande, Alison Lemkuil, Christina Manea, and Guiselle Murillo. Their work reflected the strength and clinical excellence of UCLA’s orthodontic training.

Beyond lectures, time was set aside for attendees to reconnect, share stories, and expand their professional networks over meals and a concluding reception. A lunchtime celebration honored longtime administrative specialist Francesca Moore, who is retiring after 35 years of dedicated service to UCLA Orthodontics. Faculty, staff, residents, and alumni contributed generously to a travel gift for Fran and her husband, capped off with cake and heartfelt applause.

“The success of this year’s Alumni Day was truly a team effort,” added Dr. Kapila. “Given the enthusiasm and feedback we’ve received, we’re already planning for a similar event next year.”
