Biography

Dr. Flavia Q. Pirih serves as chair of the Division of Regenerative and Reconstructive Sciences, while also holding the Tarrson Family Endowed Chair in Periodontics, and an appointment in Oral Biology. 

Dr. Pirih received her D.D.S. from the Universidade Federal do Parana in Brazil, and went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Oral Biology at UCLA. Following her doctorate, she received a master’s degree and a residency certificate in Periodontics from the University of Michigan. She also experienced further research training as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Michigan. In 2009, Dr. Pirih became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. She teaches at the pre- and post-graduate levels. Dr. Pirih was the Director of the Pre-doctoral Program in the Section of Periodontics for 10 years.

Dr. Pirih sees patients in the UCLA Periodontics and Implant Surgery Faculty Practice. She provides comprehensive periodontal and surgical implant services.

Research & Interests

Dr. Pirih's laboratory focuses on understanding the basic and clinical aspects of periodontitis and peri-implantitis, with the ultimate goal of developing new strategies to prevent and treat both conditions. The lab conducts translational research that examines the role of genetics in patients' susceptibility to periodontitis and studies peri-implantitis.
