Biography
Dr. Mallya is Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the UCLA School of Dentistry and a board-certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist. His clinical practice and research focus on advanced maxillofacial imaging, artificial intelligence, and imaging biomarkers for improving diagnosis, clinical decision-making, and patient outcomes. His work integrates CBCT, CT, MRI, and machine learning to advance precision diagnostics and evidence-based oral healthcare.

In addition to his academic and clinical activities, Dr. Mallya is an internationally recognized educator and speaker, presenting continuing education programs and invited lectures nationally and internationally. He serves as a medicolegal expert in matters involving oral and maxillofacial imaging and maintains an active educational YouTube channel dedicated to oral and maxillofacial radiology, dental imaging, and emerging technologies in dentistry.

Patient Care Activities:
Dr. Mallya provides comprehensive interpretation of cone beam CT (CBCT), panoramic, intraoral, and maxillofacial MRI examinations through his UCLA faculty practice. Through this service, he provides radiology reports and individualized one-on-one consultations with referring dentists to review imaging studies, discuss diagnostic considerations, and assist with treatment planning for complex cases.

Research and Academic Interests:
Dr. Mallya's research focuses on the application of advanced imaging technologies and artificial intelligence to improve diagnosis, clinical decision-making, and patient outcomes in oral and maxillofacial diseases. His work spans advanced CT and MRI techniques, quantitative imaging biomarkers, computer vision, and human-AI collaboration.

Current areas of investigation include:

  • Imaging biomarkers for jaw necroses (MRONJ and ORN) using advanced CT and MRI. 
  • Artificial intelligence for dental imaging, and methods to promote appropriate human-AI collaboration. 
  • Quantitative imaging and predictive modeling for temporomandibular joint disorders. 
  • Applications of AI and imaging informatics in dental education, clinical workflow, and faculty calibration. 
  • Development of standards and educational frameworks for responsible implementation of artificial intelligence in dentistry.
