Course description

This course provides foundational knowledge for safe and effective use of x-rays.

  • The first module provides an understanding of the physical nature of x-rays, its interaction with matter and its biological effects. Students will become educated users of x-rays who can apply this knowledge to patient imaging, and to practice radiation safety procedures.
  • The second module provides an understanding of the techniques and technology used to make and record radiologic images in diagnostic dento-maxillofacial radiology, including intraoral, panoramic, cephalometric and computed tomographic imaging. Principles and dento-maxillofacial applications of magnetic resonance imaging and nuclear medicine will also be discussed. Students will become familiar with principles of making dento-maxillofacial radiographs
  • The third module provides knowledge of radiologic anatomy—the foundation to radiologic interpretation. Students will become competent at identifying basic dento-alveolar anatomy on intraoral, panoramic images, and limited field of view cone beam CT images.
