The Advanced Surgical Implant Advanced Clinical Training Program is a 1-year program providing a highly motivated surgical specialist the opportunity to obtain advanced surgical training in the field of Implant Dentistry. This training will include comprehensive didactic and clinical instructions on surgical placement of dental implants, hard and soft tissue augmentation procedures, management of complex clinical situations requiring multi-disciplinary management and advanced reconstruction techniques for the “Esthetic Zone.” The Advanced Surgical Implant Dentistry program provides a surgical specialist with the desires for additional surgical curricular and hands-on training in treating complex and comprehensive surgical cases in implant dentistry.

This program will provide a surgical specialist the opportunity to function in a private practice-type office setting working as part of a team managing the most difficult clinical situations in Implant Dentistry and to enhance their surgical experiences as well as skills. It is also intended to generate surgical specialists who will return back into a clinical and/or academic setting to establish themselves as leaders in the field of implant dentistry.

The didactic portion of the program includes exposure to the clinical sciences in Implant Dentistry given throughout the academic year. Didactic topics include all surgical and prosthetic areas in Implant Dentistry with emphasis on advanced surgical procedures for hard and soft tissue management, physical diagnosis as it relates to co-morbidity factors affecting prognosis of dental implants, treatment planning, oral radiology, literature review, biologic principles as it relates to Implant Dentistry and practice management protocols. The course directors will provide feedback to the program director regarding the postgraduate’s competency and participatory levels in the form of grades and/or assessment reports.

All patient care provided by the Advanced Implant Surgical Specialist Trainee is comprehensive and proctored throughout the academic year in the School of Dentistry. The trainee will be afforded every opportunity to enhance their clinical skills and knowledge within the scope of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery as it pertains to the field of Surgical Implant Dentistry. Faculty coverage is provided at all clinic sessions as well as in-house hospital setting at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

A certificate of attendance is awarded upon successful completion of the program. This certificate is not the same as the postgraduate program certificate awarded to full-time international postgraduates in specialty training as a qualification for recognition by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Selection Process & Factors

The admissions committee considers the following criteria in its decisions:

  • Academic achievement

  • Professional goals

  • Content of letters of recommendation

Accepted candidates will be notified in March by email. A letter of acceptance signed by the Program Director and the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs will be issued upon acceptance. The Acceptance Packets will also be emailed to the candidate.

Fees: $40,800 per year (subject to change)
